Effect of Ankle Strengthening Exercise on Balance and Walking Ability to Chronic Stroke Patient

Abstract

|
Objective: This study aims to investigate effect of ankle strengthening exercise on static, dynamic balance and walking ability to chronic stroke patient.
Methods: Ambulant patients with chronic stroke was administered to the romberg test with opened and closed eyes in a standing position to evaluate static balance. LOS and TUG test has administered to determine dynamic balance. To determine the ability to walk, pre-tested 10 m walk test and 6 minutes walk test in both. Conventional physical therapy during 4 weeks and ankle strength exercise has administered during after 4 weeks. Re-assessment has done 4 weeks and 8 weeks after the intervention.
Results: There was functional improvement to romberg test with opened and closed eyes in a standing posture after therapeutic interventions, for LOS and TUG test dynamic balance has increased and 10 m walk test and 6 minute walk test was improved in both.
Conclusion: In recovery of balance and walking ability of stroke patient, ankle strength training is an effective exercise program and the effective verification associated with other factors for quality of life is required in the future.
